What do sunscreen, healthy eating, exercise and meditation have in common? They are all examples of things we can do to take care of our health.
Sunday July 24th 2016 marked international Self-Care day. Thank you to our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau for your thoughtful letter on this important day. Consumer Health Products Canada advises us that by focusing on the following seven pillars, you can maintain good health:
Self-care is not just maintaining your good physical health, but your mental health as well. Here are three of our favourite self-care strategies for you to try. Let us know what you think!
1. Self-check in
Take some time to connect with yourself. What makes you happy? What activities do you enjoy doing? When was the last time you engaged in meaningful activities? What is missing in your day-to-day routine? Schedule time for yourself on a regular basis to check in and make sure you are engaging in tasks that give you purpose and meaning in life.
Give your brain a rest by focusing on the present moment. Leave your thoughts, stresses and judgements aside while you focus on your breathing, do a body scan, or listen to the sounds of nature for a few minutes a day. Mindfulness is an evidence-based strategy for self-care, and shown to reduce stress. Check out our previous posts for more information and resources on mindfulness.
3. Try something new
When is the last time you tried a new activity - a sport, a game, volunteering, meeting new people, going to a new part of town? Trying new things and keeping your routine fresh is a great strategy for self-care. It may increase your confidence, social engagement, and you may learn something or meet someone new.
