New Year - Tips for mentally healthy resolutions

A new year brings a fresh start and new beginnings. It is a time to set goals and intentions for ourselves. But is this mentally healthy for us?

Today we discuss how to be mindful of our mental health and self care while planning for the year ahead.

Start by taking in a deep breath …..and exhale…. try this again a few times with your eyes closed. Reset your mind by connecting to your body.

Three tips for healthy new year goal setting:

1) Try an intention this year. An intention is a way of thinking. It is not as specific as accomplishing something as a goal, rather, how you want to be/think/feel. Intentions do go hand in hand with goals. For example, you may have a goal to walk your dog every day for 1 hour. This goal does not specify how you intend to feel about your dog walk. Your intention maybe then would be to have time for self-reflection, to enjoy nature, to exercise. Then on a rainy day when you don’t feel like walking the dog, if you remind yourself of the intention, you may feel a lot better about achieving your goal. Intend to smile, to feel gratitude, to enjoy time in nature or with friends… whatever makes you feel good.

2) Be realistic and break down your goals into manageable action items. Let’s face it, we all have goals and aspirations whether we write them down or think them in our head. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Be realistic and break your goals down to make them manageable. This will help reduce the stress we put on ourselves trying to accomplish everything all at once.

3) Make your mental health a priority. Think about your mental health as importantly as you consider your physical health. You can’t have one without the other. Prioritize activities such as seeing a therapist, meditation, yoga, spending time with friends, breathing, exercise and engaging in activities that bring you joy. These should be priorities as they keep our cups full!
